The Incidenceof Agenesis of Palmaris Longus Muscle and the Frequency of Left-Handedness among Adult Ijawsinbayelsa Nigeria

چکیده
This study was carried out to determine the incidence of agenesis of Palmaris longus muscle and the frequency of left handed individuals among the Ijaw ethnic group in Bayelsa State in Nigeria. A check on the incidence of agenesis was carried out on adult males and females on both hands by inspection. The flexor tendon was made prominence by flexing thumb and placing it on the little finger. The check on frequency of left handedness was done by noting the hand the subjects use to write. Results showed that the overall incidence was found to be 1.6 (16 in 1000 subjects). The incidence was on both hands (right and left). The result from the second study shows that 7.6% (76 in 1000 subjects) of Ijaws in bayelsa state are left handed. The incidence of agenesis of Palmaris longus muscle occurs more in the left hand than the right hand and more prevalent among the occidentals than the Orientals. It was also observed that the frequency of left handedness among the Ijaws was minimal.

Prevalence of palmaris longus agenesis in a hospital in Iran.
UNLABELLED BACKGROUND The prevalence of the palmaris longus agenesis (PLA) has been variously reported to be from 1.5% to 64% in different ethnic groups. Lack of reliable information about the state of the PLA in Iran made us to design a study on the agenesis of the palmaris longus (PL) among a sample of Iranian population during 2009. MATERIALS AND METHODS One thousand participants were ...
متن کاملPrevalence of palmaris longus absence – a study in the Yoruba population
BACKGROUND Palmaris longus (PL) has received a growing interest for its role in constructive surgery. Since the agenesis of PL shows a strong racial variation, it is conceivable that its prevalence on the Yoruba ethnic population in Nigeria will further confirm this phenomenon. METHODS A total of 600 subjects comprising 335 males and 265 females aged 8-60 years were used to assess the prevale...
متن کاملVariation, Length and Width of Tendinous Portion of Palmaris Longus and Forearm Length and Height: Is there a link? A Cadaver Study of Adult Iranians
Background: Palmaris longus (PL) is a muscle with marked variations. It is harvested as a tendon graft in many surgical proceduresin which a certain length of tendon is required. The aims of the present study were to determine the variations of this tendon in Iranian population and to find whether the length of PL tendon could be estimated by measuring the forearm length and height. Methods: We...

Background & Aims: The Plantaris muscle is located in the superficial posterior compartment of the leg and is absent in some individuals. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the absence variation of Plantaris muscle and its possible relation with Palmaris longus and fifth superficial flexor digitorum of the hand. Methods: 83 fresh cadavers, referred to legal medicine center, Kerman, Ir...
متن کاملHypertrophy of palmaris longus muscle, a rare anatomic aberration.
The palmaris longus muscle (PLM) is considered to be a phylogenetically degenerate muscle. For many authors, this may be the cause of its great variability. The loss of function in the PLM makes it an important muscle in plastic and reconstructive surgery. During a study of PLM agenesis rate in the Hungarian population, a 22-year-old female showed an unusual pattern of muscles in her left forea...
